Early this year, when my parents were asking us where we wanted to go during summer, we were thinking of the US. When they said Japan, we were not too happy. They convinced us it would be different.
The day had finally come. Well, kind of. Our Dragon Air flight to Hong Kong was delayed by 4+ hours due to bad weather in Hong Kong. So, instead of the original departure time, our plane left at 5 am. But that wasn't really all that bad for me and my brother, because we got to watch the IPL game (we are huge RCB fans)!
At 5:30, all excited, we began the first leg of our journey to Japan, not knowing what was in store for us in the latter part of this flight. After 3 movies, and 30 minutes of sleep, our pilot announced that he is descending to land. The weather was horrible in Hong Kong. We were almost touching the runway, all of a sudden the pilot decided to abort the landing. This was the first time I actually freaked out during what seemed a routine landing. I don't know what the captain was thinking, because right ahead of us was a mountain.
Some of you may know, Hong Kong International Airport was a marvel of engineering when it was built in the 1990s. There is water on both sides of the runway.
So after aborting the landing, the pilot immediately stepped up on the engine and the plane gained altitude and speed inspite the turbulence. Whew, we cleared the mountains, and the pilot went around the airport in circles, for about 10 minutes. During this time, there were weird sounds coming from the plane, and I was reminded of MH 370. We all prayed, and eventually all was well that ended well!
...to be continued.
